How to Repair the Corner Trim on Vinyl Siding
The outer corners on any house have double the exposure of any other surface. Vinyl siding corners are no exception. With damaged wood corner pieces, you simply remove the damaged piece and replace it with a new one. You can’t do that with vinyl corner pieces. They not only hide the ends of the vinyl siding sheets, but also the corners serve as the connector piece that holds the vinyl sheets in place. The corner trim’s fasteners are beneath the siding and hard to remove without removing siding as well. It’s much easier to create a patch for the damaged corner trim.
Measure the length of the damaged area on the corner trim. Add at least 4 inches to that amount.
Cut a piece of corner trim to the length you measured in the previous step with a pair of tin snips. Make sure the trim is the same style that is on your house.
Cut off the nail flanges on both sides of the corner trim with the tin snips.
Sand 2 inches above and below the area you are patching on the house’s trim with medium-grit sandpaper. Sand just enough to roughen the surface for adhesive. Sand the underside of the replacement trim as well. Wipe all dust off both pieces with a clean rag.
Apply polyurethane glue to the back of the patch using an old paintbrush. Wait a few minutes for the glue to become tacky, then place the replacement section against the house’s corner trim. Take care to center the patch over the damaged area. Press the glued piece firmly against the old trim.
Attach painter’s tape to the top of the patch to hold it in place until the glue finishes drying. Run a piece of tape along the bottom edge of the patch to prevent any excess glue from oozing out onto the trim. Let the patch dry overnight before removing the tape.
If you prefer not to make a patch, use a full-length piece of vinyl corner trim to cover the entire damaged piece. Follow the patch procedures to attach it. Expect to use a lot of tape to help support the weight of the corner piece as it dries. An assistant can help you position the long corner piece and tape it before it slides around too much.
